A Dress Shoe, a Dress Casual Shoe and a Casual Shoe

7 Essential Tips To Dress To Impress With Footwear

Whether you are going to a wedding, stepping into the boardroom or heading out for a weekend stroll, the right pair of shoes can make all the difference. Men’s footwear comes in various styles, each with its own level of formality, design, and intended use. Now of course, you can wear whatever you want, whenever you want, but I, Sharp & Splivie, am here to break down the differences between formal shoes, dress shoes, dress-casual shoes, and casual shoes so you can make the best choices for any and all occasions. But first, let’s get educated……..

Choosing the right outfit is equally important when selecting your footwear. A well-coordinated outfit and shoes can elevate your look significantly.

Choosing the right outfit is essential for enhancing your overall appearance. Whether it’s a formal event or a casual gathering, the right clothing can elevate your presence.

In general, men’s shoes are made only 2 ways – lace up or slip on (even if you zip it).

Lace up Shoes

Lacing is usually made in 2 different ways. One is called Blucher Lacing (See Fig. 1) where the lace flaps are totally separated at the tongue.

Fig.1 Blucher Laced Shoes

By the way, this type shoe is the preferred lacing style for someone who has a very high arch or instep. The lacing makes room for that ‘hump’ on the top of the foot.

Consider how your outfit affects your overall style and the shoes you choose.

The other is called Bal-Moral Lacing. ( See Fig.2) Bal-Moral laced shoes have the lacing meet at the start of the tongue.

This type lacing is preferred for the individual that has low arches or flat feet. Here’s a tip; if you have flat feet, look for a Bal- Moral laced shoe that has 5 or more eyelets for lacing. It will hold you in the shoe much better.

Slip On Shoes

Also known as ‘Loafers’ are designed for versatility, convenience, and style. They are slip-on shoes that offer a balance between casual and formal wear, making them a staple in many wardrobes. Here’s why they’re popular:

  • Versatility – Can be dressed up or down, suitable for business casual, smart casual, and even formal occasions.
  • Comfort – Typically made with soft leather or suede, providing a comfortable fit.
  • Timeless Style – Classic designs like penny loafers, tassel loafers, and horsebit loafers remain fashionable across generations.
  • Breathability – Their low-cut design allows for better airflow, making them ideal for warmer weather.

Loafers are perfect for office wear, social gatherings, and everyday elegance. Remembering what type foot you have will depend on what type loafer you can comfortably wear. For example, if you have a foot with a high instep or high arch, it is in your best interest to look for a loafer with what’s called a short vamp. A Vamp (See Fig. 3) is the top part of the shoe.

  • Elevate your style with sleek dress shoes that match your attire for special occasions.
  • The area from the toe to the end of the tongue. Wearing a low vamped shoe allows you to bypass the tongue hitting the high instep because it does not come up that far. Now, on the other hand, if you have a low arch or flat foot and you want to wear a loafer, you would need to wear a loafer that has a long vamp. (See Fig. 4)

When you think about your outfit, remember that the right choice will complement your shoes perfectly.

A long vamp will hold you in the shoe with less gapeing to the inner part of wearing the shoe.

  • Sizing

    In my recent blog on Tongue Pads, I talked about getting your foot measured. Each one separately. More than half of all humans have 2 different size feet. Well, what do you do to get shoes to fit well? Well, just remember this Sharp & Splivie rule;

Choosing the right attire can help you make a striking impression, allowing you to stand out at any event. The right outfit can elevate your shoes and your overall look.

Choosing the perfect outfit is crucial for enhancing your overall look and ensuring your shoes stand out.

Understanding the Importance of Your Look and Choosing the Right Outfit for Every Occasion

Understanding the right style is essential for complementing your shoes and overall look. A well-chosen option can elevate your style and make a lasting impression.

In buying lace-up shoes, ALWAYS FIT FOR THE LARGER FOOT. You can always adjust the smaller foot with things like a Tongue Pad, Heel Pad or Insole.

    Understanding Dress Styles

In buying slip-on or ‘Loafers’, ALWAYS FIT FOR THE SMALLER FOOT. Remember, we here at Sharp & Splivie are always referring to you purchasing quality footwear, meaning leather shoes. Loafers should fit comfortably snug and not painfully tight because from the moisture of your foot they are going to stretch and you want them to stretch to the form of your foot so the shoe stays on. Remeber, there’s no laces so give your feet a chance to do what they do!
